How to send USDT when the wallet has no TRX

Yes, you can send USDT TRC-20 with no TRX on the balance: the network pays for the transfer with energy and bandwidth, and both can be rented to your address in advance — paid from another wallet or from your account balance. What matters is that the resources arrive before you send and that your wallet does not insist on a minimum TRX balance.

Why TRX is needed at all

TRON has no “gas” in the usual sense. A USDT transfer uses two resources: about 65,000 energy (up to 131,000 to a new address) and about 350 bandwidth. If the address has none, the network buys them itself by burning TRX from the balance. With no TRX either, the transfer fails. So the job is not to “find TRX” but to give the address the resources.

What the address needs for one transfer

  • Energy — 65,000 if the recipient already holds USDT; 131,000 for a new address or an exchange. A 15-minute rental currently starts at 2.21 TRX.
  • Bandwidth — about 350. Every activated address gets 600 free per day — usually enough for one transfer. For a second and further transfers the same day, bandwidth has to be rented: 1,000 units cost about 0.35 TRX.
  • Address activation. If nothing has ever been sent to the address, it is not activated on the network and resources cannot be delegated to it. An address that has received USDT is activated. Check it on the address check page.

How to pay for the rental without TRX

The rental is not paid by the address that receives the energy. You can pay TRX from another wallet or an exchange, or top up your account balance in USDT TRC-20 (we convert it to TRX) and buy from the balance. Without an account — pay TRX by invoice on the buy energy page. The one rule: enter your own address, the one the USDT transfer will be sent from, as the energy recipient.

Wallets that still ask for TRX

Some wallets check the TRX balance before sending and block the transfer below a threshold even when there is enough energy. The best-known example is Trust Wallet, which expects about 28 TRX (see the Trust Wallet guide). If your wallet does this, you have two options: keep a small TRX reserve on the address (it is not spent when energy is enough) or send from a wallet without such a check — for example TronLink, the official TRON wallet: it sends USDT with zero TRX when the resources are there.

Step by step

  1. Check that the address is activated and how much energy and bandwidth it has.
  2. Rent energy for your recipient and, if you already sent a transfer today, bandwidth.
  3. Wait for delivery — usually seconds — and send USDT within the rental term.
  4. On the confirmation screen the TRX fee should be zero or close to it. If the wallet shows 7–14 TRX, resources are missing — do not confirm, or the transfer will fail with OUT OF ENERGY.
