FAILED — OUT OF ENERGY: what happened and how to send the transfer
This status means the USDT transfer did not go through: the address ran out of energy, and the TRX the network already charged for the attempt will not come back. Your USDT is still on your address. Below: why it happens and how to send the transfer on the second try without further losses.
What happened
A USDT TRC-20 transfer is a smart contract call, and TRON pays for it with energy. When the address has no energy or not enough of it, the network tries to cover the rest by burning TRX. The wallet sets a fee limit in advance — how much TRX may be burned per transaction. If energy runs out and the TRX cannot be burned within the limit or the balance, the contract stops halfway and the transaction gets the status FAILED — OUT OF ENERGY.
One important detail: the stopped contract still consumed resources. The energy the address had and the TRX burned before the stop do not come back — the network did the work, just not all of it. Your USDT did not move.
Why it usually happens
- New recipient. A transfer to an address that has never held USDT, or to an exchange, uses about 131,000 energy — twice the usual. Bought 65,000 for a “regular” transfer — the network tries to burn the rest in TRX.
- Too little TRX on the address. If energy is short and the TRX balance is below what must be burned, the transfer fails. This happens with wallets holding only USDT.
- The energy ran out or the term ended. A rental lasts for its term or until used up. If more time passed between buying and sending, or a previous transfer used the energy, it is gone.
- Energy went to another address. A common mistake is delegating to an exchange address or another account in the wallet. Only the address you sign the transfer from counts.
How to send the transfer on the second try
- Check the address resources. Open the address check or the Resources tab on TronScan: how much energy, bandwidth and TRX the address has now.
- Work out how much energy you need. 65,000 if the recipient already holds USDT, 131,000 for a new address or an exchange. The amount you send does not matter.
- Top up the missing energy. For 15 minutes, energy for a regular transfer costs 2.21 TRX right now, for a new address 4.45 TRX. Without energy the network burns about 6.85 and 13.35 TRX respectively.
- Keep a little TRX for bandwidth. A transfer also uses about 350 bandwidth. The free 600 per day covers roughly one transfer; once used up you need TRX or rented bandwidth.
- Send the transfer again — within the rental term. The TRX fee on the confirmation screen should drop noticeably; if it is still about 7 or 14 TRX, the energy is not enough.
How to avoid it next time
Buy energy before the transfer, not after the error: burned TRX does not come back. If you send regularly, it is easier to turn on an automation than to count each time — Smart Mode delivers energy before every transfer, auto top-up keeps a reserve above a threshold. For transfers to exchanges, plan for 131,000 energy from the start.
FAQ
About 65,000 Energy if the recipient already holds USDT, and about 131,000 if they don’t or if it is an exchange address. The amount you send does not affect it.
Yes, if you rent Energy (and Bandwidth if needed) in advance. But some wallets require a minimum TRX balance.
Almost never if you need 65k energy or more and have 10 seconds to buy it. Burning makes sense only for an urgent single transfer when you cannot pay for rental.
