How Much TRON Energy Do You Need for a USDT Transfer?
Short answer: a USDT TRC-20 transfer uses ~65,000 energy when the recipient already holds USDT. If the address is new or belongs to an exchange, it uses ~131,000. The amount you send makes no difference.
Why USDT needs energy
USDT on TRON is a smart contract. Every transfer calls the contract, and executing a contract consumes energy. Energy has no free daily allowance. If your address has none, the network burns TRX instead.
A transfer also uses ~345–350 units of bandwidth, the second TRON resource. Bandwidth has a small free allowance of ~600 units per account per day.
Exact consumption
| Recipient | Energy (rounded) | Energy (more precise) | TRX burned without energy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Already holds USDT | ~65,000 | ~64,285 | ~6.85 TRX |
| Holds no USDT (new address) | ~131,000 | ~130,285 | ~13.35 TRX |
| Exchange address | ~131,000 | ~130,285 | ~13.35 TRX |
The market calls the second case "two transfers" or "double volume". So a plan labelled "2 transfers" is often simply 131,000 energy.
Why a new address needs double
When the recipient does not hold USDT yet, the contract performs a heavier operation, so energy use roughly doubles. It does not matter whether it is a friend's empty wallet or an exchange deposit address.
Why the amount does not matter
The contract runs the same operations for 1 USDT and for 10,000 USDT. The fee does not scale with the amount, so larger transfers are cheaper per dollar.
What it costs in TRX
The current burn price is about 100 sun per unit of energy. Sun is the smallest TRX unit: 1 TRX = 1,000,000 sun.
Rental cost formula:
cost (TRX) = energy volume / 1,000,000 × price in sun per unit
Example: at 42 sun, 65,000 energy costs 2.73 TRX.
| Volume | Burn | Rental (market range) |
|---|---|---|
| 65,000 | ~6.85 TRX | from ~2–3 TRX |
| 131,000 | ~13.35 TRX | from ~4–6.5 TRX |
Rental prices change during the day. See current prices on the Sunlendio pricing page.
Energy for several transfers
It is easiest to count in transfers to active addresses:
| Transfers | Energy |
|---|---|
| 1 | ~65,000 |
| 2 | ~131,000 |
| 3 | ~196,000 |
| 4 | ~262,000 |
| 5 | ~327,000 |
If some recipients are new addresses or exchanges, count each of those as two transfers.
Work out your volume in 3 steps
- Count how many transfers you will make during the rental period.
- Note how many go to new addresses or exchanges.
- Enter both numbers in the calculator. It shows the volume, the rental price and your savings versus burning.
Then place an order on the buy energy page or in the Sunlendio Telegram bot.
If a transfer failed with OUT OF ENERGY
FAILED – OUT OF ENERGY means the address did not have enough energy and TRX to run the contract. The transfer did not go through, but the resources were already spent and cannot be recovered. What to do next:
- Check whether the recipient is a new address. If so, you need ~131,000 energy.
- Rent the right volume before retrying.
- Make sure you have a little TRX or bandwidth for the data part.
- Send again.
Things to keep in mind
- Get energy before sending. Burned TRX is not refunded.
- Not enough energy means the network burns the difference. If you have 65,000 but the transfer needs 131,000, the rest is paid in burned TRX.
- Unused energy is not refunded after the rental period.
- Energy must be on your own wallet, not on an exchange address.
- Network parameters can change. They are set by Super Representative voting, so the numbers are usually stable, but not forever.
Summary
~65,000 energy for a regular transfer, ~131,000 for a new address or an exchange. Check what you need in the calculator.
